Fenerbahce Ulker hosts Lietuvos Rytas in a crucial Group E encounter on Thursday night at the Abdi Ipekci Arena in Istanbul, Turkey. Both teams enter the game at 1-1 and tied for second place in the group, knowing that this result could end up being crucial in deciding which team advances to the Quarterfinal Playoffs. For L. Rytas it will be the first appearance all season without its leading big man, Marijonas Petrovic, who broke his foot in training and is out for at least the rest of the Top 16. His injury combined with the fact that big man Matt Nielsen has yet to return from an injury of his own leaves head coach Aleksandar Trifunovic without the starting froncourt that helped the team finish the regular season atop Group B. In their place, Jackson Vroman and Kenan Bajramovic will see big minutes, while 2.16-meter rookie Michailis Anismovas becomes a key reserve. Unfortunately for the visitors, they run into one of the deepest frontcourt rotations around as Fener features five players standing 2.06 meters or taller – not including power forward Mirsad Turkcan, who is still at least two weeks away from his return from a bout with a virus. The hosts frontcourt is led by center Oguz Savas and Omer Asik, who leads the Top 16 in blocked shots. The point guard matchup is a crucial one for both teams as Willie Solomon of Fenerbahce Ulker and L. Rytas’s Hollis Price are both the engines that rev their teams. Omer Onan, Tarence Kinsey, Damir Kaan and James White round out a strong perimeter rotation for Fener that features athleticism, shooting and defense. L. Rytas’s backcourt leans on Arturas Jomantas, Mindaugas Lukauskis, reserve playmaker Jared Jordan and small forward Chuck Eidson. The visitors’ interior injury woes make them the underdog and put plenty of pressure on Vroman and Bajramovic. L. Rytas, generally a very good perimeter-shooting team, will need to have its outside guys in good form to help out the bigs to have a chance at an important road win. Meanwhile Fener will use its depth to its advantage trying to pound away inside and draw fouls. Ultimately the mist-win duel for L. Rytas is at point guard, where Price will need to outplay Solomon on both ends of the court if his team is to take a tough road win in Istanbul.
